Dr. Dornfeld, professor of mechanical engineering at University of California, Berkeley where he runs the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Sustainability [LMAS] research will discuss specific steps to achieving sustainable manufacturing. For manufacturers to survive, they need a much more comprehensive understanding of their business, their customers, their own processes, and their drivers to profitability.  Concepts of sustainable manufacturing combined with lean principles help manufacturers to not only survive, but to thrive.  Businesses need to enable rapid response, to welcome change, and to learn to become adaptable and flexible.  Integrating green with lean practices is an enabling technology to do just that.  When combined with a more broadly based perspective to incorporate energy use, environmental impact and social responsibility, "lean and green" together provide powerful leverages to profit.  The pace of change requires rapid assessment and fact-based decision-making from a triple bottom line perspective of people, planet and profit.  In North America, we need to accelerate our understanding and implementation of sustainable manufacturing practices in every size company.

Can transparency increase the trust in quality manufactured products?

Is your operation facing flucuating demand, low labor cost competitors, increasing environmental regulation, energy cost increases,

Original Air Date:  December 15, 2009   Replay webinar Part II:  "Sustainable Manufacturing: Details You Need To Know"

In 2009 and preparing for 2010, the buzz about our environment, energy and ‘green’ or eco-friendly products has moved increasingly

             center stage for manufacturers.

Part I of this introduced the concepts of green manufacturing.

Especially when cash is tight, the right decisions need to be made the first time.  Dr. Dave Dornfeld shares proven methods for

approaching a true sustainable manufacturing program.

             The topics to be covered:

  • Using lean as a foundation

  • Understanding key metrics to manage towards sustainability

  • Adding environmental, energy and resource data

  • How and where to start?  Is the carbon footprint important?

  • Applying analytics and developing a project plan

  • Where does government regulation come in?
